What to do if you have already been caught
Acting fast limits the damage. Take these steps in order:
| Situation | Immediate action |
|---|---|
| Shared an OTP or password | Change the password; freeze the card or UPI app |
| Made a payment | Call your bank and report the transaction at once |
| Installed an unknown app | Uninstall it and run a security scan |
| Gave personal details | Watch for further scam attempts using that info |
In India, you can also report financial fraud to the national cybercrime helpline (1930) and on the official cybercrime portal. Reporting quickly improves the chance of stopping or recovering a transaction.
Build habits that keep you safe
Long-term safety comes from routines, not luck:
- Never share OTPs, PINs, or CVV with anyone, for any reason.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for email, banking, and social accounts.
- Set transaction alerts so you notice unauthorised activity instantly.
- Bookmark official websites and reach them directly rather than via links.
- Talk to family, especially older relatives, who are common targets.
