The warning signs that should make you pause

Train yourself to notice these red flags. Spotting even one is reason to stop:

  • Urgency and threats — "act now or lose access."
  • Requests for OTP, PIN, CVV, or passwords — no real institution asks for these.
  • Odd web addresses — a link that is misspelled, very long, or ends in a strange domain.
  • Poor spelling and grammar in an "official" message.
  • An unexpected attachment or APK file you are told to install.
  • Payment demanded by gift card, UPI to a personal ID, or crypto — untraceable methods scammers prefer.
  • A deal that feels too good to be true.

A simple checklist before you tap or pay

When any message or call asks you to click, pay, or share information, run through this quickly:

  1. Did I expect this? Unsolicited contact is the first warning.
  2. Who is really asking? Verify through an official number or app, not the contact details in the message.
  3. What do they want me to do? Sharing an OTP, installing an app, or paying a fee are danger signals.
  4. Is there pressure? Genuine organisations let you take your time.
  5. Can I check independently? Open your banking app directly instead of using their link.

If anything fails this check, do not proceed. Walking away costs you nothing.
