Car Battery Care: Simple Habits That Make It Last Years Longer

Batteries almost always warn you before they quit. Catch these and you can replace on your terms, not at 7 am in a parking lot:

  • Sluggish cranking, especially on the first start of the day.
  • Headlights that dim noticeably at idle and brighten when you rev.
  • A battery warning light that stays on while driving — this often means the alternator, not just the battery.
  • The car needing a jump-start more than once.
  • A battery that is already four or five years old, even if it seems fine.

A simple voltage or load test at any workshop takes minutes and tells you whether the battery has real life left.

What to do during long parking

If you travel and the car will sit for weeks, the battery slowly drains powering the clock, alarm and memory functions. To prevent a dead battery on your return:

  • For up to two weeks, ask someone to start and run the car for 15 minutes mid-way.
  • For longer gaps, disconnect the negative terminal, or fit an inexpensive trickle charger that keeps it healthy.
  • Avoid storing the car with a partly discharged battery, as sitting flat permanently damages the plates.
