Keep the terminals and case clean
Corrosion on the terminals — that white or bluish powder — acts like a roadblock for current. It makes the battery work harder and can cause weak starting even when the battery itself is fine.
- Check the terminals every couple of months. If you see deposits, disconnect (negative first), clean with a brush, and reconnect tightly.
- Make sure the clamps are firmly tightened. A loose terminal causes intermittent starting and can leave you stranded.
- Wipe dust and oil off the top of the battery; a grimy surface can create a small constant discharge path.
- Confirm the battery is held down securely. Constant vibration on bad roads cracks internal plates over time.
Quick monthly battery check
You do not need tools beyond your eyes and a torch. Run through this once a month:
| Check | What you want to see | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Cranking speed | Engine spins briskly and fires fast | Slow, laboured cranking |
| Terminals | Clean, tight, dry | White/blue powder, looseness |
| Battery case | No swelling or cracks | Bulging sides, leaks |
| Mounting | Held firm, no movement | Rattles, slides around |
| Dashboard light | No battery warning lamp | Lamp stays on while driving |
If your car has a maintenance-free battery, you cannot top up the fluid — but the visual checks above still apply.
