Chapter 4: Mahajanapadas & the Rise of Magadha
By the 6th century BCE, 16 Mahajanapadas had emerged.
- Rise of Magadha: favourable geography, fertile Gangetic plains, iron deposits, and rivers for trade and defence made Magadha dominant.
- Dynasties: Haryanka (Bimbisara, Ajatashatru) → Shishunaga → Nanda (the powerful dynasty the Mauryas overthrew).
- Capitals: Rajgriha (Rajgir), later Pataliputra.
This is also the era of Buddhism and Jainism, founded by Gautama Buddha and Mahavira respectively — a high-yield topic.
Chapter 5: The Mauryan Empire
India's first great pan-Indian empire.
- Chandragupta Maurya (c. 321 BCE): founded the empire with help from Chanakya (Kautilya), author of the Arthashastra; overthrew the Nandas.
- Bindusara: consolidated the empire.
- Ashoka: the Kalinga War (c. 261 BCE) transformed him toward Dhamma (a moral code of governance), spread through rock and pillar edicts.
- Administration: highly centralized bureaucracy; Megasthenes (Greek ambassador) described it in Indica.
