Chapter 2: Indus Valley (Harappan) Civilization
A Bronze Age urban civilization, with its mature phase around 2600–1900 BCE.
- Town planning: grid layout, baked-brick houses, advanced drainage systems, the Great Bath at Mohenjo-daro, granaries.
- Economy: agriculture, craft, and extensive trade (seals, standardized weights, trade with Mesopotamia).
- Major sites: Harappa & Mohenjo-daro (on the Indus/Ravi), Dholavira and Lothal (Gujarat — Lothal had a dockyard), Kalibangan (Rajasthan — ploughed field), Rakhigarhi (Haryana — largest site in India).
- Decline: debated — possibly climate change, river shifts, or declining trade.
Exam tip: site-to-feature matching (e.g., Lothal → dockyard) is a favourite question type.
Chapter 3: Vedic Period

Based on the four Vedas (Rigveda, Samaveda, Yajurveda, Atharvaveda).
- Early/Rigvedic (c. 1500–1000 BCE): pastoral, cattle-centred economy; tribal polity with sabha and samiti; relatively simple society.
- Later Vedic (c. 1000–600 BCE): shift to agriculture and iron use; larger kingdoms (janapadas); the varna system becomes rigid; rise of elaborate rituals.
- Texts: Brahmanas, Aranyakas, and the philosophical Upanishads belong to this tradition.
