Most affiliate marketing "case studies" are screenshots with no context. This one is different: I'll walk through exactly how a small blog went from ₹0 to ₹50,000 in a single month, what worked, and — just as important — what wasted my time.

The niche: boring, specific, and buyer-focused

The single biggest decision was the niche. I avoided broad, glamorous topics ("make money online") and chose a narrow niche with clear buyer intent — a category where people actively compare products before purchasing.

A good affiliate niche usually has three traits:

  1. People spend money in it (tools, gadgets, services).
  2. They research before buying (so they search Google).
  3. You can say something more useful than the top results.

If a niche fails any of these three tests, affiliate income is an uphill battle.

The content strategy: 80% helpful, 20% commercial

The mistake beginners make is publishing nothing but "best X" listicles stuffed with affiliate links. Search engines and readers both see through that. The mix that worked:

  • Informational posts ("how to choose…", "what is…") that build trust and topical authority.
  • Buyer-intent posts ("best… for…", "X vs Y", "honest review") that carry the affiliate links.
  • Internal links sending readers from informational posts to the buyer-intent ones.

The 3 articles that earned most of the money

Out of ~40 published posts, three buyer-intent articles drove the majority of commissions. This is the classic 80/20 of affiliate marketing — a few well-targeted pages do the heavy lifting. The lesson: don't spread thin. Find the buyer-intent keywords and make those articles genuinely the best on the internet.
