The three stages of selection
1. Preliminary Exam (screening)
The Prelims has two objective (MCQ) papers:
- General Studies Paper I — decides whether you qualify for Mains. Covers history, geography, polity, economy, environment, science and current affairs.
- General Studies Paper II (CSAT) — a qualifying paper; you need 33% to pass. Tests comprehension, reasoning and basic numeracy.

Crucially, Prelims marks do not count toward your final rank — it is only a screening test. But you cannot reach Mains without clearing it, so it deserves serious attention. Every year, well-prepared aspirants stumble by ignoring CSAT — don't be one of them.
2. Main Exam (decisive)
The Mains is a descriptive (written) examination. It typically includes compulsory papers (such as General Hindi and Essay) along with several General Studies papers, and is where your rank is largely built. Because answer-writing is a distinct skill, start practising structured answers early rather than only reading.
The exact number of papers, subjects and marks in Mains has been revised by UPPSC over the years — confirm the current structure from the latest official notification.
3. Interview (Personality Test)
The final stage is a personality test assessing your awareness, clarity of thought, decision-making and suitability for public service. Your final selection is based on your combined Mains + Interview performance.
