A simple framework to decide
Instead of following the crowd, answer these honestly:

- Discipline: can I stick to a study routine without anyone monitoring me?
- Resources: can I find or already have good books and materials for this exam?
- Subject difficulty: are the subjects ones I can teach myself, or do they need a guide?
- Finances: is coaching affordable without straining my family?
- Self-awareness: can I honestly identify and fix my own weak areas?
If you answered "yes" to most, self-study is likely a strong fit. If you struggled on discipline, resources or subject difficulty, coaching — or a hybrid — may serve you better.
The hybrid path
You do not have to choose one extreme. Many successful aspirants blend both. They might join coaching for the one or two subjects they find hardest and self-study the rest, or use online lectures for concepts while practising independently.
The principle to remember is simple: coaching should support your self-study, never replace it. Whatever structure you choose, the deep, individual work of revision and practice — the kind we describe in our UPPCS Prelims preparation strategy — is where exams are truly won.
