Track it so you can see it

How to Build a Reading Habit That Actually Sticks

Habits feel more real when you can watch them grow. You do not need an app, though one can help.

  • Mark a small tick on a calendar each day you read. A growing chain of ticks becomes oddly motivating, and you will not want to break it.
  • Keep a simple list of finished books in your notes. Seeing the list lengthen is its own reward.
  • Note one line about each book, even just "loved it" or "too slow." It deepens what you remember.

The point of tracking is not pressure. It is proof that you are becoming a reader, which slowly changes how you see yourself.

Plan for the days you miss

You will miss days. Everyone does. The readers who last are not the ones who never slip; they are the ones who never miss twice.

If you skip a day, do not treat it as failure or a reason to give up. Just read your two pages the next day. One missed day is an accident. Two in a row is the start of quitting, so the only rule worth protecting is: get back on the very next day.
