Eat well without eating into your wallet
Food is where budget travel becomes a pleasure rather than a sacrifice.

- Eat where locals eat. A crowded, no-frills place with regulars is almost always cheaper, fresher, and tastier than an empty tourist restaurant.
- Order a thali or the local speciality instead of à la carte. You get more food for less and you taste the region.
- Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it where it is safe, instead of buying bottle after bottle.
- Keep a few biscuits, fruit, or dry snacks in your bag so hunger never forces you into an overpriced impulse meal.
Spend on experiences, skip the rest
Not every paid attraction is worth it, and some of the best things cost little or nothing.
- Prioritise the two or three experiences that made you want to visit, and let the filler go.
- Many destinations offer free or nearly free joys: beaches, walking trails, local markets, temples, sunsets, and street life.
- Watch out for commission traps, where a driver or guide pushes a shop or restaurant. A polite no protects your wallet.
- Buy souvenirs from local markets, not airports or tourist counters, and only what you will actually keep.
